Average UK citizen would sacrifice 4% of income to meet 2050 net zero target
Our poll of over 7,600 UK residents, suggests that the will of the public to overcome the climate crisis may be stronger than that of industry and Government.
According to a report by UWE Bristol the cost of decarbonisation will reach 1-2% of GPD in 2050, but the cost of inaction would be far greater. Our poll asked: What percentage of your income would you sacrifice to make the UK become a new zero carbon emitter by 2050?
The percentage sacrifice averaged out over the nationally representative sample was 4.1%.
The result varied from as low as 1.7% in Blackpool, and as high as 6.7% in South West London.
Is well as the will of consumers, the report also warns that a “joined up” approach between industries is required, and that the Government should take a “whole of supply chain” approach to coordinate this.
